Blackjack Explained – Splitting Cards
In a game of Blackjack, after you place your bet, the dealer will deal you two cards both face up on the table in front of you. If you are dealt two identical cards, say two 7’s, or two Kings for example, then you will have an option to split your pairs if you like. This means that your two identical cards are split, and you then play each card separately. You must play them both with equal bets.
A good pair to split would be two 8’s. As one hand they only total 16, which is not a good Blackjack hand to have. However, if you split the 8’s, you will have an opportunity to get 18 on both hands which is a lot better than 16.
If you are dealt two 10’s, this would be a very bad hand to split, as the only way to lose this hand is if the dealer gets Blackjack or 21. A dealer is not allowed to split their pairs.
