Blackjack Explained – Card Values

In a game of Blackjack, the suit is of no importance at all. Whether the cards are diamonds, hearts, clubs or spades, the suit is absolutely irrelevant. It is the face value of the card which is most important. An Ace has a value of 1 or 11. The Jack, Queen and King all have the value of 10. The rest of the cards in the deck all have their face, so 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 10.

Although the Ace can have a value of 1 or 11, as players you do not need to specify its value. The value given to the Ace will always be the one that gives you the best hand. For example, if you were to hit on a 10 and 6, and the dealer dealt you an Ace, the value given would be 1, making your hand 17. If it was however given the value of 11, then your hand would total 27 and you would bust.
